Stephen Albair’s ‘Private Views’

Stephen Albair’s show “Private Views, Hidden Reflections,” on display in San Francisco’s Dryansky Gallery, is an incredible collection of 20 colorful constructed images that take viewers into scenes that evoke memories — some pleasant and others not. The artist spends months creating his images by placing found objects on a shelf in his Hayes Valley apartment. When he feels the set is ready, Albair photographs the dioramas using an old Nikon camera body from 1970 and window light. The resulting images are thoughtfully layered with multiple textures and meanings that one could spend hours... Read More

Stephen Albair (born June 30, 1942) is an artist living in San Francisco who specializes in tableau photography, metal work and narrative jewelry. Born in Haverhill, Mass and raised in Atkinson, New Hampshire, he was part of the thriving arts scene of the 1970s and 1980s in Chicago and New York City, where he became part of a community of artists that included Keith Haring and Andy Warhol, before moving to San Francisco in 1989.
